Learning Challenges: Looking at Learning by HEART

I am bad at decision making and thus choosing just one part of HEART that sticks out to me is quite the challenge. Health and happiness, attention, and time all seem like areas that are both important to me and that I could improve in greatly. However, since I feel like I already work on health and happiness and time quite frequently, I suppose focusing on attention through this class would not be a bad idea. I have tried mindfulness and meditation before but always give up on it so maybe this time I will try it and stick with it. I also liked the idea of the pomodoro technique and may try implementing it.

As for the other two areas, I am discovering this semester that forcing yourself to wake up at the same time every morning is both good for your sleep health and productivity. I started a job this week that makes me wake up at 7:30 every morning. While waking up that early is not something I particularly enjoy, I have noticed that I have been more productive during the day because I know I must be in bed by 11:15 pm every night if I am to get a good night's sleep. This means I am sleeping more consistently and getting more done which is pretty great. It might even make up for the fact that I am a college kid asleep by midnight and up before 9 am.

All in all I am excited to try some of the different HEART challenges this semester. I hope that at least one of them truly improves my school or home life or both!

  1. I like the part about sleep and work and that leading to a more healthy lifestyle. Like you, I wake up around 7:30 ish, well my alarm goes off at 7:30 but we all know we don't get up at the EXACT time our alarm goes off but I end up getting up at about 7:50 to be at work around 9. I also need to be in bed by midnight at the LATEST. I try to be in bed by 11 most nights and feel like I am different than a lot of other college students cause sometimes I am going to bed at 10:30 and everyone else is out with their friends. But believe it or not I actually enjoy waking up early once I am up because like you said, I feel much more productive.

  2. Sleep is definitely a factor in my life that needs improvement. My sleeping schedule varies so much from each day, and I know it's not the healthiest. What you said is true about being more productive throughout the day when you've waken up earlier. However, I struggle sleeping in early just to wake up early because I spend my nights catching up on homework and studying. I wish I could be a morning person, but I've accepted that I'm more of a night owl.

  3. Hi Eryn, I think that is so great that you are choosing to focus on having a regular sleep schedule as a college student! It is beyond difficult to have a regular sleep schedule as a college student due to being involved in extracurricular activities, working, and taking a full load of courses all at the same time. I have noticed that when I go to sleep around the same time every night and get up around the same time every morning that I am more productive as well!
