Introduction to a future occupational therapist (OT)

Hello! My name is Eryn Jordan and I am a senior at OU which means this is my last semester! I am majoring in psychology with a minor in health and exercise science. I recently got accepted to the  Health Science Center to get a master's in occupational therapy!

Though Norman is now a second home to me, I am actually from North Texas, Carrollton specifically. My parents, my sister and her family, and my dog still live in Carrollton. My brother however lives in Virginia with his fiancee. My sister, Ryan, is eight years older than me and is married to Derrick. They have a precious little 2 month old named Anabelle and the past few months of my life have been spent obsessing over her. She is my first niece/nephew and I am completely in love with her.

The day I met Anabelle (Personal Photo)

My brother, Kyle, is a history teacher in Virginia and his Fiancee, Lauren, is attending William and Mary for graduate school. My mother is a middle school special education teacher and my father works for Applebees on the business side. I love my family very much and try to visit as often as I can, though between school and work it can be difficult to find time.

Along with the human members of my family, I have one dog named Reba. We got her when I was a senior in high school and she fits right in with the family.

I do not have any family here in Oklahoma, but I have met some pretty fantastic people. I am a part of InterVarsity Christian Fellowship and I met many of my close friends through this organization. This includes my boyfriend, Brennan, and best friends Katie and Bill. My roommates are also pretty fantastic and I met the three of them freshmen year when we all lived on Walker 10.

Besides being a student, I also have a job as a life skills coach for a young man on the autism spectrum. He is a joy to work with and I feel so blessed to have this job. I also volunteer at CCFI's building in the Boys and Girls Club weekly.

I do not know that I could choose a favorite book, but The Name of the Rose, Harry Potter, the Bible, and To Kill a Mockingbird are definitely at the top of the list. As for movies, my all time favorites are The Princess Bride and A Knight's Tale. On TV I really love Friends, Star Trek, and Gilmore Girls among many others. Hobby-wise, I picked up crocheting about a year ago and really enjoy both that and coloring.

I hope this post has helped you get to know me a little better. Please feel free to contact me on my Comment Wall. I hope we have a great semester together!

  1. Hey Eryn! My name is Patrick and I look forward to getting to know you more over the semester. You have a really interesting story and I respect you a ton for the job you do as a life skills coach and also volunteering at CCFI'S building in the Boys and Girls Club. We need more people like that in this world! It must be somewhat rough being in Norman without any family but it sounds like you have found ways to cope with it and found groups of people that you can call family. I am from right here in Norman with most of my family within a 5 mile radius of OU so I am definitely spoiled in that category lol. Also, Friends is one of my favorite shows as well and cant wait for the little reunion that is coming out soon!

  2. Eryn,
It was nice getting to know you a tiny bit from this post. I respect and I think its really great what you are doing and your job. You seem to have a really big heart! I am glad you have meet and made some great friends. When I first went to college I was far from my family and didn't know anyone. When I moved away though my connection with my sister become even closer. I love every time I get to visit them. I hope you have a great semester. I think you'll be a good pediatric OT.

  3. It's nice to meet you, Eryn! I am actually from North Texas as well (Plano specifically). You lived on Walker 10?! No way!! I lived on Walker 11, but I spent more time on Walker 10 than I did my floor because most of my friends lived there. I love Harry Potter too! What is your favorite book from the series? I am currently watching all of FRIENDS in order. I look forward to reading more of your work this semester!

  4. What a beautiful picture to greet us at your introduction, Eryn - and such a perfect caption for that picture! Very sweet! By the end of this semester, Annabelle is going to be a different little person than she is in that picture! And your Reba is such a cutie too: maybe she can become the star of some memes. This class can definitely some dog memes since I am always sharing the cat memes from Cheezburger.

For me the most fascinating part of your Intro is the work you are doing as a life skills coach for someone with autism. WOW. That sounds really amazing, and if there is any way you can imagine to use your project for this class to help you in that job, I think that would be great! I know that people with autism can have a really different sense of language and of the way we see the world through language (which is a big part of what storytelling is about)... I am guessing you are getting some powerful insights into different ways of experiencing the world through this work. So, like I said, that sounds really amazing. Thank you for sharing that here in your Intro!

  5. Hi Eryn. It's nice to meet you!
Anabelle looks so peaceful in that picture. She's precious.
I really liked how you wrote a lot about your family. My family is really important to me too, of course.

It seems like you are a very busy person with school, working, and volunteering! It will all pay off in the end though whenever you get into OT school!

I just read To Kill a Mockingbird last summer! I know. It's a little late because most people read that in high school but I never got the chance to. I really loved it and couldn't believe I went so long without reading it because it is such a classic.

It was good to meet you and I hope you have a great last semester!

  6. Hi! Your niece is adorable. It's really cool that you work with an autism patient (? I'm not sure what adjective to use... sorry!) I have 2 cousins (twins) that have autism, and I admire my aunt all the time because she takes care of them by herself.

It's also cool that you took up crocheting. I tried a couple years ago, and my mom tried to help, but I just couldn't get it right....

...HARRY POTTER!! Pottermore is back up by the way, so you can take the quiz to get sorted and get your wand!

  7. Hey! It sounds like you have a passion for helping others and I think that is great. I am a health and exercise major wanting to do something in the medical field as well so that is cool that we share that desire. I like how you have the weather widget on your blog, definitely something helpful while living in Oklahoma. I don't think I have ever been to Carrollton but I have heard of it and actually lived in North Texas for a year and really liked it. Good luck in your last semester!

  8. Hi Eryn! I also was a health and exercise major at OU, so I know a little bit about the career path. I know it is incredibly challenging, but will be so rewarding whenever you finish! I am also a huge Harry Potter fan! It's so great that you spend your extra time volunteering. Looking forward to a semester working with you!

  9. Hi Eryn! I’m graduating in the spring too. Can’t believe it’s already time to leave OU. I think it is great you want to become a pediatric OT. I bet that job would be really rewarding. I am also from Texas and absolutely love it! Your niece looks adorable. I can relate because my sister just recently had a baby so I’m an aunt for the first time to the cutest little nephew!

  10. Congrats on making it to your final semester! From the little I read about you, I think your choice to go into pediatric OT will be perfect for you. You really seem to enjoy working with and helping people. Your niece is absolutely precious. The Princess Bride is my all time favorite movie as well. I love it. I can watch it over and over. Good luck this semester.

  11. That's so awesome that you want to be an occupational therapist! I heard that field is quite competitive, but you seem like a very driven person! I'm so jealous that you're an aunt! ugh! I have two older sisters (who are twins), and I've been begging them to give me a niece or a nephew. They always have an excuse though. Your niece is beautiful, and I hope you spend a lot of time with her!

  12. I love your dog; she's adorable! Her tiny little legs and her fluffy ears are cracking me up.

It seems like you really have a passion for health and kids, which is awesome! I'm an HES minor as well, although I picked it more because I'm interested in fitness and nutrition (I can never wrap my head around medical ideas or anything that gets too scientific.)

I've never read The Name of The Rose, but I love HP and the Bible, and I really like To Kill a Mockingbird as well, so now I'm thinking I should give it a shot!

I think it's really neat that you went to school in Oklahoma even though your family is kind of far away. That's brave! And congratulations on your last semester!!

  13. Hi Eryn! Anabelle is absolutely precious! Congratulations of becoming an Aunt! I am also from North Texas and thing it is the best place ever. I am also a health and exercise minor at OU and I wonder if we have ever had any HES classes together? And Reba, she's adorable! I am such a puppy lover and she melts my heart! Good luck with the rest of your senior year!

  14. Hi Eryn! I am also a senior this year. I think it is so cool that you are getting your master’s in occupational therapy. That is such an amazing field to work in! Your dog, Reba, looks so cute and friendly! I love that you volunteer at CCFI. That place has a special place in my heart! I hope you are having a great last semester.

  15. Hi Eryn! Annabelle is VERY cute, as is your dog. And wow--grad school! That's in my plans, too, but a bit farther down the road. It sounds like you spend a lot of your time helping other people, which is awesome--just out of curiosity, what made you pick occupational therapy? Anyway, it seems like we have similar tastes in books and movies--To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books of all time too (the movie is also awesome), and The Princess Bride is quite possibly my favorite movie, although I don't think that made it into my introduction! It was great to meet you through your introduction, and good luck as you finish up the semester!

  16. Hey Eryn, nice to meet you! Congrats on getting accepted into OU HSC! I'm a senior as well and although I am definitely ready to graduate, it's also sad knowing that I won't be back for classes in the fall! I feel like school is the only thing I've ever known, so it's going to be different no longer having classes, homework, tests, etc. Although I don't read books like I used to when I was younger, I still remember when I did read the Harry Potter books. I'm supposed to be going to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter this fall and I can't wait for that! Anyway, good luck on the rest of your semester!

  17. Hey Eyrn,

It was nice to get to read your Introduction and get to meet you through reading it! First of all, congratulations on getting accepted into OU HSC! I wish I was in your position, about to graduate, but I still have one more till I graduate. After that, I start my Masters. What was it that attracted you to do occupational therapy? Anyway, good luck during Finals and in the future!

  18. Hi Eryn! Nice to meet you. It's almost over! I'm graduating this semester, too, and I couldn't be more excited. Glad to hear that one of your favorite books is the Bible, one of mine, too. I'm from a pretty big family and have quite a few nieces and nephews, so I know exactly how you feel about your first niece. Anyway, thanks for sharing!
